Progress Report
Upon acceptance of the Urban Design Element, Omaha by Design began working with the Mayor and City Department directors to prioritize the 73 policies identified in the Element and to outline a 2005 Program of Work. Several Civic Omaha recommendations were considered priorities for 2005.

Urban Design Regulations
Translating the policy recommendations of the newly adopted Urban Design Element into provisions of the Zoning Code and other related provisions is considered the highest priority for 2005.  Omaha by Design has hired Robinson Cole and WRT Planning and Design, the same firms that created the Urban Design Element, to draft the zoning code revisions and additions.  In September 2005, Omaha by Design announced the initiative and put together a technical advisory group (TAG) made up of design professionals, City officials, real estate developers and agents, property managers, business representatives, lawyers, advertising executives and community leaders.  The TAG will work with the City Planning and Law departments and legal and planning consultants to evaluate the proposed code revisions throughout the winter.  Public input sessions will begin in early spring 2006. The revisions will be ready for submission to the Omaha Planning Board and City Council in fall 2006.

Gene Leahy Mall/11th Street
The Gene Leahy Mall and 11th Street are located at the heart of downtown Omaha.  Situated in between the business core of downtown, Old Market, Riverfront and Qwest Center and Holland Performing Arts Center, the Mall and its surrounding streets are one of the most recognizable civic places in the City.  On March 15th, Omaha by Design unveiled a plan for the area that addressed four primary issues: safety and visibility; accessibility and urban connections; activity and programming; and expansion of the Old Market character along 11th Street. Fund raising strategies are now being developed to make the plan a reality.

Public Art
Public Art Brochure and Inventory
Omaha by Design was awarded a grant from the Nebraska Arts Council and the H. Lee and Carol Gendler Charitable Fund to create an on-line inventory of public art in Omaha and publish a public art brochure.  The inventory includes a list of all publicly accessible art in the city as well as maps of each location [link to inventory].  The brochure features art pieces selected by the Public Art Commission to raise awareness of art throughout the city.  It is available on-line and at Omaha Public Libraries, museums, galleries and tourist destinations throughout Omaha.

Streetscape Handbook
Omaha by Design is currently working with representatives from the City, State, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), American Planning Association (APA), American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) to create a Streetscape Handbook for the City of Omaha.  The handbook will specify design and installation standards for streetscape elements within the public right-of-way.  These elements include: street furniture (i.e. benches, trash cans, planters etc.), street lighting, parking and traffic information signs, sidewalks and trees.  By building in accordance with the outlined standards, Omaha will present a more cohesive and ordered appearance.  The Handbook is scheduled for completion in Winter 2006.
